Software Engineer, Digital Operations

South Burlington, Vermont, United States Full-time 8+ yrs

At BETA Technologies, we apply our intellectual curiosity, passion for aviation, and commitment to sustainability toward a shared mission of revolutionizing electric aviation. Regardless of the position one holds, each team member brings their talent and desire to positively impact the environment and lives of others in a refreshing, vibrant, and inclusive culture.

The Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team embeds technical and AI capability directly into the business — going where the problems are, working alongside teams to understand their needs, and deploying solutions that make a real difference. As a Forward Deployed Software Engineer, you will work within a cross-functional pod embedded directly with business units across BETA to understand complex operational challenges, design and build software solutions, and stay with each engagement until the solution is working and adopted. A successful member of this team is genuinely curious and exploratory, comfortable in uncharted territory and energized by problems without obvious solutions. They lead with humble confidence, leaving ego at the door and staying open to what the people around them know. This role requires equal parts engineering depth and interpersonal skill: you will build trust with non-technical stakeholders, translate ambiguous problems into clear technical designs, and ship high-quality software in a fast-moving environment.

How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:

  • Embed directly with business teams across BETA to identify, scope, and solve operational and technical problems
  • Design, develop, and deploy full-stack web applications, internal tools, and APIs that address real business needs
  • Leverage AI and LLM technologies to accelerate development and build intelligent workflows for the teams you support
  • Translate complex, ambiguous requirements from non-technical stakeholders into clear technical designs and working solutions
  • Assess technical feasibility of proposed requirements and communicate tradeoffs clearly to stakeholders
  • Resist the pull toward immediate solutioning – spend time in the problem space alongside business teams before defining technical approaches
  • Partner with core product teams to define graduation paths for solutions, ensuring FDE's work lands somewhere it can be maintained and grown
  • Connect the dots across engagements, surfacing recurring needs, gaps, and opportunities that FDE can compile into clear signals back to product and platform teams
  • Maintain technical documentation to facilitate knowledge transfer and long-term adoption of solutions
  • Take smart risks, own the outcomes, and share what you learn (wins and failures alike) so the team gets better with every engagement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Proficiency in modern full-stack development (e.g., React/TypeScript and Python or Node.js)
  • Experience with agentic coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Codex)
  • Experience with REST APIs, databases (SQL and/or NoSQL), and cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
  • Experience with version control (Git) and CI/CD pipelines
  • Demonstrated systems thinking: ability to see how solutions fit into broader operational and technical contexts
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work directly with non-technical stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently, manage multiple priorities, and adapt rapidly to changing requirements

Above and Beyond Qualifications:

  • Previous experience at a startup or in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment
  • Experience building internal tools and enterprise applications
  • Experience in aerospace, manufacturing, or a regulated industry
  • Experience with enterprise system integrations (ERP, HRIS, PLM, QMS)
  • Track record of identifying, scoping, and delivering projects with minimal direction
